Susannah Gill, a professional photographer specializing in capturing the beautiful moments of childbirth, had the privilege of capturing the precious first meeting between the Guiley family and their newborn. The photographs she took perfectly capture the raw and pure emotions displayed on the faces of the couple, making them truly priceless. Life is full of surprises, and in this particular instance, the Guileys were in for an unexpected and delightful shock. Anticipating the arrival of a baby sister for their 3-year-old daughter Hazel, Kim Guiley and her partner Travis were about to experience a twist they never saw coming.
Once the labor was over, Kim realized that they hadn’t put much thought into preparing for this momentous event. She took to the Santa Cruz Family Doula Collective’s website to share her surprising discovery, writing, “I gently spread the newborn’s legs apart and to my amazement, we had a baby boy! I was taken aback, to say the least. I was filled with an overwhelming sense of joy. I had always hoped for both a son and a daughter, but throughout my pregnancy, I had convinced myself that we were expecting another girl.”
The 28-year-old Guiley confessed that she was almost convinced to join. It’s incredible how strong persuasion can be! As a doula specializing in newborns and deliveries, I should have known better. I understand that you should never have expectations placed upon you. I’m quite exhausted from being pregnant. Interestingly, there seems to be a correlation between feeling unwell and having a girl, so I believe that might be a contributing factor. Even my 2-year-old daughter is convinced it will be a girl. Looking back, I see that I made a lot of silly excuses.
Guiley, who regularly writes about her home birth experiences, also mentioned that she had a miscarriage in 2015. She believes this might have played a role in her decision not to find out the baby’s gender. However, regardless of the gender, children are still an immense joy and a precious gift for parents.
“She expressed her desire for a healthy baby after the unfortunate miscarriage,” she shared. “While my husband was eager to find out, I suggested we savor the surprise. We chose to divert our attention. Recently, the online community has been captivated by the captivating photographs taken by Susannah Gill, illustrating the exact moment when the couple realized their baby’s gender was not what they had anticipated back in July. Observing their countenances in these pictures, it is impossible to deny the priceless emotions they conveyed.”
